CTM 2017 – Fear Anger Love

Festival for Adventurous Music and Art

With Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, Tanya Tagaq, NON Worldwide featuring Chino Amobi, Angel Ho, Nkisi, Ligia Lewis a.o.

From January 28 to February 5 HAU Hebbel am Ufer will once again be the central venue for the CTM Festival, now in its 18th year. The festival has always made space for radical forms of expression in sound and dissonant emotional worlds. Under the title “Fear Anger Love“ CTM 2017 now shifts the focus explicitly to emotions in and through music – thereby addressing the pressing questions of our time: How do we deal with emotions that disturb us, and with those who perceive them as such? What distinguishes an emancipatory way of dealing with emotions from a reactionary one, a democratic from an anti-democratic one? How can we recognize genuine emotions and their strategic usage?
With commissioned works, performances, a daily programme of discussion events and special attention to the wide variety of music geographies outside the mainstream, CTM 2017 explores the potential of (musical) emotion between resentment and emancipatory politics. Like hardly any other art form, music allows us to have exemplary experiences with the effects and possibilities of emotion and conscious emotionalisation. The festival programme presents artists and projects that engage with these potentialities and react to those current developments and struggles that are increasingly impelled by emotions.
