Kornél Mundruczó

Biography

Kornél Mundruczó was born in Hungary in 1975. He studied at the Hungarian University for Film and Drama and is now a renowned theatre and film director consistently working with certain actors. They become artistic partners in his productions, which he prefers to develop in a team. After several years of freelance collaboration with this team, Mundruczó founded his own independent theatre company, Proton Theatre, in Budapest in 2009 with Dóra Büki. Its works tour around the world. “Hard To Be a God”, an international co-production, has appeared at the following festivals: Alkantara Festival, Portugal; Baltoscandal, Estonia; Culturgest, Portugal; KunstenFestivalDesArts, Belgium; Rotterdamse Schouwburg, Netherlands; Theater der Welt 2010, Germany; Théâtre National de Bordeaux, France; Trafó House of Contemporary Arts, Hungary. The play “Szégyen/Shame”, after J. M. Coetzee, was premiered in 2012 at the Wiener Festwochen. Their most recent play, “Dementia” (autumn 2013) played at HAU Hebbel am Ufer during the festival “Leaving is not an option?” and has been invited to various places, including the SPIELART Festival in Munich and the Théâtre National in Bordeaux. The work created for the TR Warszawa, “The Bat or My Little Cemetery” (2012), has been highly praised at festivals in Poland and Hungary. Mundruczó's film “White God” recently received the “Un Certain Regard” Award at the Cannes Film Festival (2014).
