Marlene Monteiro Freitas

Biography

Marlene Monteiro Freitas was born in Cabo Verde and is a founding member of the dance company Compass. The group collaborates regularly with the musician Vasco Martins. After studying dance at P.A.R.T.S. (Belgium) and at the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian (Portugal) she has been developing a dance project with the inhabitants of  Cova da Moura, a socially disadvantaged neighbourhood in Lisbon. She collaborates regularly with Emmanuelle Huynn, Loic Touzé, Tânia Carvalho and Boris Charmatz. Along with Trajal Harell, François Chaignaud and Cecilia Bengolea she created “(M)imosa” (2011), which was presented in 2012 as part of Tanz im August at HAU Hebbel am Ufer. With her “Paraíso” she came back to HAU in 2015 and with "De marfim e carne - as estátuas também sofrem /Of ivory and flesh - statues also suffer” in 2016. Freitas is also a member of the Lisbon-based artists collective Bomba Suicida.
