Schwabinggrad Ballett

Biography

Schwabinggrad Ballett is an activist-artistic collective from Hamburg, founded at the turn of the millennium to create unexpected situations outside the ritualized forms of leftist protest. The name Schwabinggrad Ballett combines a reminder of the Nazi’s greatest defeat and the first Bohemian street musician riot in the republic. The group already appeared at HAU Hebbel am Ufer in 2014 as part of the series “Phantasm & Politics”. Over the course of the so-called refugee crisis Schwabinggrad Ballett has banded together with Arrivati, a performance group of refugees and people of color. Together they have appeared with “Face to Face with the Monument” at the Vienna Festival (2014), and with “Chöre der Ankommenden” (2015 - cooperation Kampnagel Hamburg) in front of two refugee housing facilities in Hamburg and at the Theater Bremen. Recently they developed the intervention “Beyond Welcome!” (2016 - cooperation Kampnagel Hamburg), which they showed in front of a refugee reception camp and at the Hamburg Rathaus. In September 2016 they released their collective album “Beyond Welcome!”, which they have presented in numerous concerts.
