The official politics of memory so far has largely reduced life in the GDR to perpetrators and victims of the Stasi. 30 years after the fall of the Wall, it is time to take a new look at life in this vanished land, shedding light on complex historical processes without romanticising or demonising. It is about a “rehabilitating the rehabilitation,” as historian Karsten Krampitz has called for. Along with the discussion, various artistic positions thematise 1989 and its consequences.
