After its premiere at Tanz im August in 2018, HAU once again presents Constanza Macras’ latest work. Chatsworth is the name of one of the townships in Durban (South Africa), where Indian immigrants were isolated during apartheid. In this production by the same name, the Berlin choreographer depicts the history of Indian migration to South Africa in absurd sequences with a feeling for Indian drama and its famous hand gestures. Traditional Indian dance and theatre are interwoven with hip hop, Kathak, African and contemporary dance. Musicals are the common ground on which cultural appropriation is not condemned but seemingly necessary. Through the lens of Bollywood the performers immerse themselves in a universe of assimilation, transformation and resilience: the diasporic self. “Witty, intelligent and energetic, a wide variety of levels – of narrative, reflection and style – shift in and out in Macras’s laconic way,” was how Michaela Schlagenwerth summarized the evening in Berliner Zeitung.
