Fearless Speech #11

From Violence to Justice

Part of the HAU event series “Fearless Speech”

  • Dialogue
French /  With German simultaneous translation /  English simultaneous translation /  ca. 120 min.

In the context of the simultaneous appearance in German of Édouard Louis’s novel “Histoire de la violence” (S. Fischer) and Geoffroy de Lagasnerie’s study “Juger: L’Etat pénal face à la sociologie” (Suhrkamp) the two writers will initiate a political discussion in this event around the topics of violence, state and justice. It is rare for a novel and a theoretical work to respond to one another like an echo, as is the case here. Starting from the personal experience processed in the novel and the results of sociological studies, both will attempt, each in his own way, to reflect on the cycles of violence, on the logic of trauma, on the status of the victim, on accusations, medicine, judges and police, but also on sociology and the critique of psychology with regard to these topics. It will also be about updating the critique of the penal system and the repressive apparatus of the state. For them, in a world where the logics of repression and the penal system are intensifying, it seems particularly important to propose a different ethics of justice, of law and of understanding the other.
