The International Building Exhibition (IBA) Berlin ’84–’87 wrote European urban construction history using the principles of “cautious urban renewal” and the “critical reconstruction” of the city. Still experimental at the time, the instruments and solutions developed in this context – public participation, ecological construction, new housing forms or the repurposing of buildings – have today become standards of modern urban development. After more than 30 years the themes that move the area around HAU (southern Friedrichstadt) remain the same as ever. “The inner city as a place of residence.” There’s hardly any part of the city that is as diverse: In an area of 1 km² surrounding the old post office you can find tourism Meccas, historic squatted houses, new buildings with new investor profiles, abandoned houses, public housing threatened by displacement, and much more. As part of a commission from HAU the architectural collective GuerillaArchitects conduct two city tours, with experts leading visitors through the constantly changing neighbourhood, which has been the playground for city makers for 30 years.
