Raimunda is probably a woman by name. But actually she is an allegorical figure, for the history of hidden, invisible identities dwarfed by patriarchy or other power structures.

In his work, the performer and choreographer Josep Caballero García advocates the dissolution of normative categorizations and stigmatizations in homogeneous societies. “Who’s Afraid of Raimunda” uses literary and musical set pieces from medieval Iberia, which pursue the hedonistic desire for a religious, as well as sexual, free life. But who is Raimunda? For Caballero Garcia, she embodies the lustful resistance against repressive mechanisms of power and exclusion. In his new work everyone will be Raimunda: The performers move playfully between history and fiction and reconfigure traditional images and roles of our cultural bodies.

Caballero García adapted the HAU co-production especially for the queer feminist art and cultural centre District Berlin. It is a collaboration with the performers Göksu Kunak aka Gucci Chunk, Lea Martini and Enis Turan, the interdisciplinary artist Claudia Hill, Elliott Cennetoglu responsible for lighting design, the dramaturge Anne Kersting, as well as with the composers Thomas Dorsch and Alexandre Maurer and 12 musicians of the Lüneburg Symphony Orchestra.
