Lina Majdalanie & Rabih Mroué

Biokhraphia (2002)

Part of the retrospective "Outside the Image Inside Us"

  • Theatre
45 min.

A furious solo in the form of a fictional interview, in which the journalist and the interview subject are one and the same. The voice from the recorder is merciless, hounding, asking about professional and private details, allowing no time to think and not even seeming to listen. The dialogue increasingly starts to take on the quality of an interrogation. What's unclear is who's speaking: Is it the inner self causing such agony, or is it someone else after all?

The early work by Mroué & Majdalanie is about positioning of theatre, sexuality, and censorship. It touches upon crucial actualities vis-à-vis an artist’s position and an artist’s works in the era of globalization. It questions and confronts the role of certain social and political taboos rooted in Lebanese society, without any pretence to answer questions put forth. On the contrary, "Biokhraphia" attacks conventions and plays up on the evident – it manipulates eternal and sacred truths, and stands at the edge of the abyss of doubt, ambiguity, uncertainty, and true and false. As indicated by its title, "Biokhraphia" is a pun on biography and the Arabic term ‘kharaphia’ signifying delirium, legends, senility, and shit...
