Steinerne Gäste

Lecture Performance

  • Performance
German /  approx. 50 mins.

After recently exploring cultures of remembrance and forms of forgetting, theatre-maker and performer Oliver Zahn now documents the ways in which the charges, forms of representation and icons of political systems are dealt with. “Steinerne Gäste” (“Stony Guests”) examines the undead afterlife of statues when they're banished and removed. This lecture-performance is dedicated to the effects of removing public monuments and the accompanying social shifts: What happens when the initial dust has settled, when protesters, counter-protesters and the media have departed, and the zeitgeist has changed along with them? A discursive dance of death begins to unravel amongst secret industrial halls, secluded cemeteries, forgotten battlefields and dark forests. Oliver Zahn observes how fallen statues continue to haunt falling societies, shedding light on current ways of dealing with the spectre of the past.
