On Air: The Importance of Radio

Radio in transition: next to classic terrestrial programs broadcasted via satellite, a great variety of Internet-based programs have become widely available. Like no other medium, radio is integrated into our everyday lives. Its general popularity is based on two factors: first its regional specificity, second the personal address of the radio host, who often becomes a brand him/herself. The origins of genres like techno can, for instance, be traced back to radio shows hosted by Charles Johnson aka Electrifiying Mojo, who mixed funk tracks with instrumental hip hop and Kraftwerk’s machine sound. Or John Peel's radio shows where he invited unknown musicians who became quite famous after he featured them. This raises the question of the influence that is, for instance, exerted by Theo Parrish’s newly founded Internet-radio Internet radio W.O.K.E., which is short for “We Only Keep Evolving”? W.O.K.E. was developed to make up for the lacking representation of POCs in today’s coding scene.

“On Air – The Importance of Radio” is moderated by Lisa Blanning and features John E. Collins from Underground Resistance, a radio DJ himself, and Diana McCarty from the independent artist radio Reboot.fm, Hanna Bächer a freelance radio journalist and Juan Atkins who still runs the famos "Deep Space Radio" with music curated by the greatest minds of Detroit Techno. The panel focuses on the role of the radio and the importance that radio shows can today assume.
