We Insist! Sonic Disobedience

  • Music

This evening centers music as a “means towards both individual self-fashioning and communal liberation” (Gilroy 1993: 40), by inviting the audience to a musical journey with Franck Bidin, followed by The Swag. The title of this evening references the 1960 jazz album “We Insist! The Freedom Now Suite”, one of the most influential and popular jazz records with explicit political ambitions from the years of the Civil Rights Movement. The music of the album, and Abbey Lincoln’s voice and lyrics in particular, convey a deep sense of urgency for change. Sixty years on, the Black Lives Matter movement has the same sense of urgency. Much like this evening, the album intertwines a complex set of rhythms, melodies, ideas and Black radical thought across time and space.
