The textile shop Kamil Mode at Kottbusser Damm 9 has existed for 16 years and is part of the almost forgotten textile cosmos that north Neukölln and the adjacent part of Kreuzberg once was. Kamil Mode has already gone through two rent increases. The owner, Hassan Qadri, pays 1,200 Euro for 61 m². But his business is still doing well. The owner of the building at Kottbusser Damm 9, Thorsten Cussler, seems uninterested in all of that. He terminated the lease on December 12, 2018. Hassan Qadri didn’t leave. The shop is more or less occupied. Qadri won’t accept the injustice of the commercial rent market without a fight. Gertrud Schulte Westenberg shows how the Quadri family, along with active neighbours from OraNostra, an association of small business owners, craft businesses, social, cultural, and health facilities in the Oranienstrasse neighbourhood, are fighting back against the threat of displacement.
