Berlin-DNA

Berlin beats. Berlin speaks. Vertically. Horizontally. Polyphonically. The city gets at you. Gets under your skin. Into you. Stresses you out. Gets on your nerves. Becomes part of your DNA. Its often touted ‘diversity’ or the special sound that makes the city so unique can be seen as a clash of the most divergent vitas, as a coming together not just based on mutual respect but as a simultaneity of competing viewpoints. A century after the creation of Walter Ruttmann’s “Berlin – Symphony of a Metropolis,” we might ask whether the palpably contradictory energies at work in the city can be contained in one narrative or whether the attempt to control them is doomed to failure. In “Berlin-DNA” the Berlin director, actor and musician Tamer Yiğit tells stories about what makes up the life flow of the city: diffuse fears, everyday struggles for survival, the fragility of characters in search of recognition and identity, the conflicts that result from hyper-individualism and self-empowerment.
