Neubau − ein Heimatfilm

  • Film
German /  With English subtitles /  81 min.

Summer in the Uckermark: Markus is torn between his love for his grandmother, whom he has to stay at home and take care of, and his desire for a new love in Berlin. Over the course of a series of daydreams, he is visited by a collection of fabulous and sparkling demons who serve as harbingers for a queer urban chosen family who can free him from his loneliness. When he falls in love with Duc, everything gets even more complicated. In fact, the boxes are already packed in Markus’ apartment in a newly constructed building for his move to the big city.

Where do I want to live – and how? There are the existential questions that “Neubau” (newly constructed building) concerns itself with. This Heimat (homeland) film is a cooperation between the actor and writer Tucké Royale, the director Johannes M. Schmit, Schuldenberg Films, and HAU Hebbel am Ufer. It began shooting last year. The recordings of Markus’ hologram family were made in honour of the 50th anniversary of the riots at Stonewall Inn in New York during the motorcade “Stonewall Uckermark” through Brandenburg, which was organised via an open call. In the meantime, “Neubau” has received the 2020 Max Ophüls prize for societally relevant films and − shortly before its nationwide cinema release − is coming to the newly adapted HAU1 to call for an age of new self-evident understanding and mutual care.
