Unacknowledged Loss. Art and Rituals

  • Dialogue
English /

Life can be seen as a sequence of “moments of transition” – large or small incidents that expose us to inevitable changes. The dwindling meaning of traditional forms for ritually shaping such moments of transition in life leads us to look for alternatives. In her practice, the curator Barbara Raes deals with revitalizing and redeveloping rituals of transition. How can we newly learn to cope with loss and grief?

By invitation of the international production house HAU Hebbel am Ufer, Barbara Raes and a number of Berlin artists have intensively researched this question. The resulting eight personal works about bidding farewell were seen at HAU in 2017 as part of the project “Unacknowledged Loss”. A comprehensive documentary now gathers interviews, images and reports on the topic of loss.

With contributions by Nathalie Bikoro, Claudia Hill, Jassem Hindi, Jasmin İhraç, Ligia Lewis, Elisabeth Nehring, Maria Scaroni, Mieko Suzuki, Oliver Zahn and Barbara Raes, almost all of whom will participate in the book presentation.
