Vanishing Twin / Conny Frischauf

Somewhat daring would probably be the thesis to imply a sinister prophecy for Vanishing Twin with the album “The Age of Immunology”, which was already released on Fire Records in November 2019. Nevertheless, it is remarkable that the band took up the statements of the medical anthropologist A. David Napier in his book of the same name, which already in the early 2000s established an analogy between immunology, in the sense of the defence against foreign bodies, and current social patterns. In the texts of Vanishing Twin, sung in the native languages of the musicians from England, Japan, Belgium, Italy and France, these social hardenings and defence patterns against ‘the non-self’ are questioned. Vanishing Twin's sound also reflects the band's diversity in pop-historical references: Tropicalia-esque rhythms, jazzy piano sounds, film score borrowings, billowing, electronic retro futurisms, reverb guitar tracks and the influence of kraut rock are internalised here in improvisational joy of playing to form a strong, musical statement.

In downtempo leisureliness Conny Frischauf lets her songs breathe and unfold in sound and language. By means of 8-bit minimalism, synthie soundscapes in cosmic music tradition, analogue drum computers, obscure sound snippets and reverberant vocals, the Viennese generates unobtrusive hits that, despite their catchiness, elegantly sail around kitsch with nerdy underground qualities.
