Treffpunkte

With Phil Collins, Sarah Vanhee, Dries Verhoeven, Lutz Henke, Yukihiro Taguchi & Raul Walch

Over the past few years, urban space has often been the subject of theatrical explorations. But what about the status of the private in the public sphere? Is it a place where something like intimacy might still be possible? In an age when public space has become entirely saturated by the forces of markets, can there even be communication between people that is worthy of the name?

To start off the new season, beginning on October 1st, HAU Hebbel am Ufer is presenting the series Treffpunkte. For their interventions, artists like Phil Collins, Dries Verhoeven, Sarah Vanhee as well as Lutz Henke, Yukihiro Taguchi and Raul Walch are seeking out locations in Berlin's city space that are located in the grey zone between the public and the private.

Experimental situations will be played out together with theatregoers or passers-by, people who are intentionally present or merely by chance. These situations will look into how the relationship between public and private is being restructured under the current political conditions of neoliberal urban development. In what ways does digital data transfer alter urban space and the social interactions that take place in it? How can we both localise the increasingly endangered dimension of the “personal” here in an encounter, while at the same time keeping it from harm?
