"After 1989, the spectacle built by politics for the eyes of the media acquired new dimensions in irrelevant extravaganza and contempt for common sense. The only consolation ordinary citizens have today is the possibility of global comparison, however, that’s of hardly any help when their agency is constantly neutralized by multiplying screens – of TV cameras, of lies, of teargas smoke, of cheap rhetoric. We can try to deconstruct these screens, to ignore them or to imagine ways to live beyond them. Often, we turn to artists to show us how to perform any of these scenarios.
In a selection of 25 slides I will look at some such artistic examples from the past 25 years in Romania."

Bogdan Georgescu: Working with „THE OTHERS“ afterwards
"After eight years of Active Art projects, from community-based projects and documentary theatre to cultural, educational and social involvement initiatives, the number of questions regarding participatory art and socially engaged art has multiplied proportionally. Working with marginalized communities, based on ethnic, social and financial status, sexual identity and orientation etc., my projects aimed to give these communities a voice and visibility. But when does an artist start to be intrusive? How much artistic input is needed? How can one be affective and true to the community’s identity, while not compromising one’s artistic standards? How can one prevent “transforming” oneself into a pseudo-social worker and still aim for social impact? Is this even possible? Can the impact be predicted, qualified or measured?
Utilizing two of my recent projects – Rahova Uranus Project (2006-2011) and ROY-G-BIV (2011-2013) – one initiated by artists, the other solicited by the community, I will explore whether participatory projects are affective platforms for social change."
