Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley

Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley is an artist living and working in Berlin and London. In her output, she aims to archive the experiences of Black trans people, combining lived experience with fiction for an imaginative retelling of Black trans people's stories. Her work includes installations, video games, role-playing performances and music.
In 2019, Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley performed at the Münchner Kammerspiele as part of the festival “Queer and Now: From Stonewall to Queertopia”. In 2020, the Tate Modern invited the artist to give a solo performance, and the artist took part in the Münchner Kammerspiele's festival “Within the Lonely Hours”. Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley also presented a project at the Trans Film Festival Berlin. Furthermore, she has a collaboration with Travis Alabanza, who appeared at HAU in 2019 for the festival “The Present is Not Enough – Performing Queer Histories and Futures”. Other renowned venues that have shown her work include the Julia Stoschek Foundation, Berlin (2022); David Kordansky Gallery, Los Angeles (2022); Project Arts Centre, Dublin (2022); Skäneskonstförening, Malmö (2022); Arebyte Gallery, London (2021); QUAD, Derby (2021); Les Urbaines, Lausanne (2019); and the Barbican, London (2018). In 2023, she will contribute to the Helsinki Biennial.
