Frances Stark

Biography

Frances Stark is an interdisciplinary artist and teaches at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. She primarily works with image, text and objects and is mainly known for her works that oscillate between drawing and text. In addition, she produces videos and sculptures as well as performances. Her works often contain references to pop culture and literature, and they thematize questions of sex/gender and her identity as a woman, artist and mother. Stark's works have been presented in various solo exhibitions internationally, such as at the Centre for Contemporary Art (Scotland), greengrassi (Great Britain), Marc Foxx (USA), CRG (USA), Galerie Daniel Buchholz (Germany). In 2008 he works were included in the Whitney Biennial at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. She became very prominent with her video “My  Best Thing” (2011), which was invited to the 54th Venice Biennale and which she now presents at  HAU Hebbel am Ufer.
