Sebastian Baumgarten

Biography

Sebastian Baumgarten was born in East Berlin in 1969. He studied musical theatre direction at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin was an assistant to Ruth Berghaus, Robert Wilson and Einar Schleef. For his 2006 staging of “Orestes” at the Komische Oper in Berlin he was selected director of the year by the journal Opernwelt. In 2011 he opened the 100th Bayreuth Festival with Wagner’s “Tannhäuser”; in 2013 his “Saint Joan of the Stockyards” was invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen; in 2015 he directed “Cement” by Heiner Müller at the Maxim Gorki Theater in Berlin and in January 2016 “Hamlet Machine” (Wolfgang Rihm) at the Zürich Opera House.
