Sophia Süßmilch

Biography

Sophia Süßmilch, born in Munich in 1983, works with sculpture, painting, photography, video, installation, and performance. She is also active as an author. She studied sculpture in Munich and painting in Vienna. Central for her work is the female body as political and poetic material, as a “playful tool.” She moves humorously between ironic distance and aggressive intimacy, raising questions in her work about power, identity, and the absurdity of human existence. In 2018, she received the Bavarian Art Promotion Award; in 2020, the Visual Arts Promotion Award from the City of Munich; and in 2024, she received a working grant from the Kunstfonds Bonn. Sophia Süßmilch lives and works in Berlin.
