STAN & de KOE

Biography

For over 25 years the two theatre collectives STAN & de KOE have been among the most significant protagonists in the Flemish theatre scene. What the two groups have in common is a particular performing style that is marked by intense research, autobiographical examination of the material and a commitment to text-based theatre. The group STAN was founded in 1989 in Belgian Antwerp by Frank Vercruyssen, Jolente De Keersmaeker, Damiaan De Schrijver and Waas Gramser, who was replaced by Sara De Roo shortly thereafter. The group’s repertoire encompasses plays by Chekhov, Gorki, Schnitzler, Ibsen, Bernhard and Pinter, which are performed in updated versions of their own. STAN collaborates with other groups such as Dito’Dito, Rosas and the company de KOE. The latter was also founded in Antwerp in 1989. The collective today consists of Natali Broods, Marlene De Smet, Bram De Vreese, Willem de Wolf, Pol Geusens, Joke Quaghebeur and Peter Van den Eede. For their first touring production at HAU Hebbel am Ufer, “The Marx Sisters”, Willem de Wolf is working as writer together with the actors Natali Broods and Sara De Roo.
