Teresa Forcades i Vila

Biography

Dr. Dr. Teresa Forcades i Vila (*1966) is a Catalan physician, theologian and nun. She studied internal medicine in New York and theology at Harvard before joining the Benedictine Order and entering the mountain convent of Sant Benet de Montserrat near Barcelona. Her research engages critically with the medicalizing of society, theological anthropology, as well as queer theory and feminist theology. In 2013-14 she served as professor of Theology and Gender Studies at Berlin’s Humboldt University. She is the co-founder of the movement ‘Procés Constituent’, which advocates independence for the region of Catalonia. The British newspaper The Guardian has called her one of the most outspoken leaders of southern Europe’s far left.
