“Whisperings”

A Sound Piece by Susan Stone and Esther Broner After a performance by Suzanne Lacy

“Whisper, the Waves, the Wind” (1983–1984) was a collaboration between Suzanne Lacy and a group of women over 65 from Southern California. A series of political and media actions culminated in a performance by the sea in front of 1,000 spectators. On a beach in La Jolla, California, 154 women dressed in white discussed their lives, their relationships, their hopes and their fears.
The sound piece “Whisperings” was created by Susan Stone, with the writer Esther Broner, whose mother participated in the performance “Whisper, the Waves, the Wind” by Suzanne Lacy. It was produced by VOICES (Everett Frost and Faith Wilding) and broadcasted on WGBH radio in the United States.
