Michael Turinsky

Biography

Michael Turinsky is a physically disabled artist and theorist based in Vienna. His work explores the intersections of contemporary dance and performance, disability, and political and aesthetic theory. After studying philosophy at the University of Vienna, he became deeply involved in inclusive dance practice in 2006. Referring to his artistic approach as “crip choreography,” Turinsky critically examines notions of inclusion and the resistant materiality of the body within subversive processes. His solo Precarious Moves received the Nestroy Prize for Best Off Production in 2021, and in 2023 he was honored with the Outstanding Artist Award from the Federal Ministry of Vienna for Arts, Culture, the Civil Service and Sport.
