Biography

Mike Huckaby’s “Sun Ra Reel-To-Reel Sessions” are dedicated to the legacy of the influential jazz composer, cosmic philosopher and band frontman Sun Ra. Not only do they give new life to the sound universe of Sun Ra, they also adapt it with the help of modern experimental electronica. In 2011 Richard Zepezauer and Mike Huckaby began with the first sessions. In that same year they released the “Mike Huckaby Reel-To-Reel Edits” on the label Kindred Spirits. Since then a small number of selected artists, including Pole, Thomas Fehlmann and Jimi Tenor, have taken part in the sessions. As a Detroit DJ, producer, sound designer and teacher Huckaby is best known for his comprehensive musical knowledge. He produces profound and lyrical house and techno music for his two labels Deep Transportation and S Y N T H. In addition he works as a sound designer and lecturer as well as for companies like Native Instruments and Ableton and for the Detroit-based foundation YouthVille, which works with young people. Richard Zepezauer is a DJ and producer living in Berlin. He has taken part in several projects that stage classical music in modern contexts, working on unusual sound textures. At the same time his own label n s y d e serves as a platform for music that can barely be subsumed into any genre. They are all joined by the house music DJ and founder of Uzuri Artist Bookings & Management Lerato Khathi, better known under the name Lakuti. She stands for a sound that is heavily inspired by soul, funk, jazz, and Chicago house.
