Guillermo Calderón

Biography

Guillermo Calderón is a director and writer for film and theater. He studied Theater and Performing Arts at the Universidad de Chile and at the Dell’Arte School of Physical Theatre in California, as well as Film Studies at the University of New York. Today, he works both in Santiago de Chile and internationally. His productions engage with the legacy of Pinochet’s military dictatorship, for example “Villa + Discurso” (2011) and “Escuela” (2013). Calderón’s works have been shown in over 25 countries and have received numerous awards.
In 2012, he worked in Germany for the first time, writing and directing two commissioned plays for the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus: “Beben” (2012) and “Kuss” (2014), which dealt with the major earthquake in Chile in 2010 and the conflict in Syria, respectively. Calderón also wrote the screenplay for the film “Neruda”, which was screened at the Director’s Fortnight in Cannes in 2016. In 2023, he received the award for Best Screenplay at the Venice Biennale for “Ema and El Conde” (directed by Pablo Larraín).
His first production at HAU Hebbel am Ufer was “Mateluna“ in 2016, developed for the festival “The Aesthetics of Resistance – Peter Weiss 100”. In 2024, his latest production “VACA” premiered at Kunstfest Weimar and will be presented at HAU in October 2025.
