CTM, Berlin’s festival for “Adventurous Music & Art” is celebrating its 15th anniversary. Under the motto “Dis Continuity”, the festival will set off on an expedition to little known and forgotten regions from 24 January to 2 February. The programme sheds light on the often invisible connecting lines between past discoveries and the musical practice of the present. Now that the paradigm of the digital has found its way into nearly every area of life, this year’s CTM festival will seek to work out constructive ways of dealing with these changes and the increased need for historical confirmation.
At the opening, Thomas Köner and Asmus Tietchens (Der Kontakt der Jünglinge) will present their new album. It deals with one of the constitutive works of electronic music: Karlheinz Stockhausen’s “Mikrophonie I”, which anticipated – already in 1964 – the sound aesthetics of industrial music. The British musician James Holden will present his new album “The Inheritors” for the first time in Germany. Cyclope, a project by two long-term members of the legendary post-industrial band COIL, perform unique hallucinatory music, to which Anthony Hegarthy also contributed recently.
There are also striking intersections between past and present to be seen in the showcase with the Finnish composer, designer, artist, scholar, and filmmaker Erkki Kurenniemi. Further highlights: a collaboration between the label Editions Mego and the legendary Groupe de Recherches Musicales from Paris; an evening dedicated to the 50 year anniversary of the electronic music studio EMS in Stockholm; an homage to the recently deceased Dutch pioneer of electronic music Dick Raaijmaakers; an appearance by the American synthesizer performer Charles Cohen as well as a tribute to Maryanne Amacher, the unforgotten researcher in psycho-acoustic illusions.
