A double bill featuring works by Samaa Wakim and Islam Elarabi, both alumni of previous editions of “Un|Controlled Gestures”, the fourth edition of which will take place from 23 to 25 April at HAU3.

What is it like to grow up in a war zone? When you breathe in and physically feel the political conflict every day? How do you cope as a child in such an environment?
“Can you still hear the bombs? I can hear them.”
Choreographer and performer Samaa Wakim grew up in the Palestinian territories. Her everyday life was marked by political tension and violence. In her solo dance piece “Losing It”, Samaa Wakim questions how this experience has shaped her identity, exploring how the trauma of past generations manifests itself in her own body. Using movement and sound, she evokes memories of her childhood and the imaginary world she created to survive. Propelled by her own sounds and choreographer Samar Haddad King’s live soundtrack, she floats between fear and hope, between the sounds that frightened her and those that comforted her.
Samaa Wakim is an alumna of the first edition of “Un|Controlled Gestures”, in which the work was created. The fourth edition of “Un|Controlled Gestures” will take place from 23 to 25 April at HAU3, and Wakim was part of the jury for this edition.

Based on the energetic music style of Mahraganat, Islam Elarabi combines urban movement vocabulary with contemporary dance in his solo “Just One Tile”.
“I come from a place where a single tile can be a stage”.
In the underground, in taxis, amidst crowds and protests, the popular Egyptian music style Mahraganat established itself in the early 2000s as a powerful expression of a rebellious young generation and has been considered the “sound of the revolution” since the Arab Spring in 2011. Based on his own life experience and collective memory, Elarabi combines the movement vocabulary of Mahraganat with contemporary dance in his solo “Just One Tile”. In doing so, the Egyptian choreographer and dancer demands respect for an art form that speaks of control and freedom as much as it does of fear, frustration and euphoria.
“Just One Tile” was first presented as a work in progress at the third edition of “Un|Controlled Gestures” in Cairo and Berlin and has evolved into an intimate yet universal portrait of struggle, resistance and belonging.
