Colonialism – A Musical Oral History Performance

Part of “Berlin bleibt! #4”

English /

Grace Wangari and Sven Kacirek strongly believe that a profound knowledge on colonialism and its effects is absolutely necessary to understand today’s political and sociological correlations in a global context. To this end, the storyteller, who lives in Nairobi (Kenya), and the musician from Hamburg take their audience with them to the African continent, back to the colonial era from 1870 to 1990. By looking at the past from African perspectives, they want to find a responsible way of dealing with the colonial era in order to recognise and overcome future oppression and exploitation. Grace Wangari follows the African technique of musical storytelling, because oral tradition on the African continent had been the most popular way in order to convey knowledge from one generation to the next. Accompanied by the live music of Sven Kacirek, she reports on the deeds of the occupying powers through the individual fates.
