Occasions

DancePerformanceTanz im August

Isabel Lewis’ Occasions are events situated between performance, philosophical salon and party that she has organised in various cities since 2013, most recently at the Frieze Art Fair in London, Kunsthalle Basel, and Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in Turin. As artistically designed environments, in which text, music, dance, plants, food and aromas concur, the Occasions are influenced by the location in which they take place, and represent an invitation to the audience to participate in a sensory, intellectually stimulating experience in a hospitable atmosphere. ‘Lewis turns socialising into art’, wrote the online magazine artsy. Lewis’ ‘latter-day rituals’ (Phaidon) are inspired by the Greek symposium, which for the Dominican-American artist combines carousing and discussion, sensuality and intellectuality. Isabel Lewis studied dance, choreography and Literature Critiscm. In 2009 she moved from New York to Berlin, where in the last years she has developed a practice which combines the skills of the dancer, the DJ, and the orator. In this way the dancer becomes a host crafting the atmosphere in a decorated space where conditions are generated for a celebratory meeting of human and nonhuman presences.

With the kind support of the Späth'sche Baumschulen and Quartiermeister.
