Not as the story of nationalism, but rather as the story of a complete lack of nationalism. This is how Belgium is represented in a passionate and ambivalent homage. In "Belgian Rules/Belgium Rules," Jan Fabre reaches into the treasure chests and trash buckets of his homeland Belgium. He tells its history with the aid of a heterogenous collection of references from the Belgian art history: from Hieronymus Bosch and Jan van Eyck to René Magritte. Through these abundant images, arranged in a strict symmetry of 14 chapters, fantasy and reality, myths and facts are combined – ever so stimulating. Not only are these paintings provocatively brought to life, they become the basis to study socio-cultural phenomena – and not solely Belgian ones. Both poetic and funny, contemplative and enraging, the result is always highly aesthetic. Last in 2013 HAU Hebbel am Ufer invited twoof Fabre’s iconic pieces from the 80s:“The Power of Theatrical Madness”and “This is theatre like it was to be expected and foreseen.”
