YO BRO

Performance

German /  English /  approx. 70 min.

“For Black Individuals, Childhood can feel very nostalgic because once you become aware of the gravity of your identity, you can never go back. (…)” – Mithsuca Berry (Bildende*r Künstler*in)

Beyoncé and Jay-Z, “The Prince of Bel-Air”, “Married... with Children”, “ Family Feud” or The Kelly Family – societal ideas of family are often established by (pop-)cultural representations. Although it seems obvious that kinship and close, intimate, kinship-like relationships can work independent of physiognomic similarities, non-white as well as queer people are constantly denied this kind of connection. The HAU co-production “YO BRO” questions standard, normative representations of family by playfully revisiting them and distorting them. Joined by her twin brother Aljoscha Tischkau, who works as a social pedagogue, the choreographer and performer Joana Tischkau has developed a piece that explores cultural and art-historical representations of family relationships. Using the performative potential of their bodies, they create images of similarity and difference, thereby retelling family history / histories.
