The new piece “TOURNAMENT” brings dance and music together in a new way. Five dancers and a music ensemble use skill and creativity to question and rethink classical forms.

Adam Linder’s choreographies are devoted to the specifics of dance, combining innovative approaches to movement and performativity. His new piece, “TOURNAMENT”, which is set to a specially commissioned score by Ethan Braun, reflects the historical interplay between music and dance. Inspired by the notion that to challenge classical forms you need to perfect them first, this work merges technical virtuosity and artistic experimentation. The stage turns into a playing field, where musicians of the Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop and five dancers negotiate the myth of harmonious unity.

Synopsis by Adam Linder and Ethan Braun

A whistle blows. The games begin.

Preliminary Heat: Music and dance set a responsive field in motion, listening and receiving. Athleticism roots into the ground. Rhythm and harmony pulse into the air.

Heat 2: Is a tussle; a push and pull of opposing partners to the insistent energy of musical loops.

Heat 3: All players align. The fan, glide, and strings merge together in shared time.

Heat 4: The revelry in performing for one another. A bowing to and mashing-up of old dance or musical references. This will boil until someone must surrender.

The Procession: The players and the instruments find rest. Through rest they transform, marking out a new space in the field.

We’ll See: Playfully stepping into a new groove that leaves the Alpha attitude of competition behind.

Nana Epiloque: This space has the potential for everywhereness. Other ways of making sound are produced. The Beta-Girls dance between animation and abandon.
