“Situation mit Zuschauern” examines the ethics of contemplation and the pleasure we derive from watching others. After his first visit in 2016, director Oliver Zahn returns to HAU Hebbel am Ufer. His work oscillates between a drawn curtain and explicitly staged violence. Together with his company HAUPTAKTION, he tests the limits of what can be shown on stage. In this performative essay, the performers work against a video screen: how political is their viewpoint? At what point does a witness become a voyeur? This is a piece concerned with both the desire to observe and a voyeurism that is today more easily satisfied than ever before.
