Richard Djif

In Chimpanz the journalist Jhon Hélèzong and his cameraman Norbert Kaka research crimes committed during the rebellion of Nirien. Just as the rebel leader is threatening to shoot them, they are rescued by the immortal ruler Papa Ndem. In power for 139 years, the dictator grants the two journalists an exclusive live interview in his palace. But the rebels storm the residence and escape from the guards together with the journalists. The manhunt begins.

The first action film from Cameroon by Richard Djif is a bitingly comic political satire about corruption and oppression in a fictional African state. After the premiere the director was abducted, imprisoned and tortured in Cameroon, while the film's actors received death threats. In November 2013 Richard Djif fled to Germany where he applied for political asylum. He was recently seen at HAU Hebbel am Ufer as one of the performers in the play “Inventar der Ohnmacht” by Edit Kaldor, where he reported on his daily life with an unclear residency status. A few days before the theatre premiere, his asylum application was rejected. Since then, the appeals process has been running, which can last for years.

HAU Hebbel am Ufer has invited Richard Djif to present his film “139... les derniers prédateurs” at HAU3. After the screening the filmmaker will speak with Pierre Vicky Sonkeng Tegouffo (Refugee Council of Brandenburg) not only about threats of censorship, persecution and imprisonment due to art, fiction and satire in Cameroon, but above all about the situation of refugees in Germany.

As part of the event, donations will be collected to cover the costs of Richard Djif's asylum appeal process.


Au Chimpanz, le journaliste Jhon Hélèzong et son caméraman Norbert KAKA enquêtent sur les crimes de la rébellion Nirien. Le chef des rebelles est sur le point de les abattre lorsque le tigre immortel, son excellentissime Grand Papa Ndem, les enlève et leur impose une interview en direct de sa résidence. Les rebelles y font soudainement irruption mais prennent la fuite après une confrontation avec les gardes du palais. Les journalistes en profitent pour s’échapper, mais la chasse à l'homme ne fait que commencer.

Le premier film d’action du Cameroun de Richard Djif est une satire politique acerbe traitant de la corruption et la répression dans un état africain fictif. Après la première du film le réalisateur camerounais a été enlevé, incarcéré et torturé et les acteurs du film ont reçu des menaces de mort. A la suite des ces évènements Richard Djif est venu demander l’asile politique en Allemagne en novembre 2013. Il a récemment participé à la pièce de théâtre „Inventar der Ohnmacht“ d’Edit Kaldor, où il thématise l’impact sur son quotidien de l’incertitude concernant sa demande. Quelques jours avant la première du spectacle sa demande d’asile a été rejetée. Le réalisateur a déposé un recours mais la procédure peut s’étendre sur plusieurs années.

C’est dans ce contexte que HAU Hebbel am Ufer a invité Richard Djif à présenter son film „139...Les derniers prédateurs“ au HAU3. Après la présentation du film le réalisateur et Pierre Vicky Sonkeng Tegouffo (Conseil de Réfugiés de Brandebourg) parlerent de la censure et des représailles que suscitent l’art, la fiction et la satire au Cameroun, mais aussi de la situation des réfugiés en Allemagne.

La possibilité sera donnée de faire un don pour contribuer aux frais judiciaires de Richard Djif.
