In her walk-through installation, Berlin-based (post)digital artist Theresa Reiwer explores the vision of the world wide web as a democratic, solidarity-based commons that is committed to serving people rather than exploiting them.

The online world was once a utopian promise of global connectedness. The experience of discovering the web together has since given way to algorithmically choreographed bubbles. With the platform economy, the way we meet online has changed. Since then, our online interactions have been shaped by profit-driven motives and the systemic amplification of conflict, dynamics that are currently solidifying into fascist structures and extending into physical spaces.

Set against the backdrop of a cyber café, visitors of “Internet Explorer” navigate essayistic video worlds and mini-games that interweave the digital present with earlier online moments. Accompanied by a speculative AI acting as both guide and operating system, they are led to the question of whether the promise of access and participation has ever been fulfilled, or whether existing power structures have merely been reorganised.

Following “Lasting Generation” (premiering at HAU in 2024), this is the second HAU co-production with Reiwer.
