Sex Education II: FIGHT

  • Performance
With English surtitles /  Serbo-Croatian /  Slovenian /  approx. 70 mins.

“Fight” reconstructs the struggle for reproductive freedom in Yugoslavia. During and after World War II, when abortions were punishable by prison, illegal (back-alley) abortions claimed many women’s lives. Marital rape, on the other hand, was not punished by law. Based on political documents and the biographies of women's rights activists, theater director Tjaša Črnigoj and her team tell a story of the Yugoslav women's movement that interweaves the personal with the political. It is, for instance, about the partisan and politician Vida Tomšič who, together with her partner, the gynecologist Franc Novak-Luka, campaigned for the right to family planning and a sexual education that goes beyond biology and focuses on human relationships. At a time when neo-conservative forces in Europe are once again questioning the right to safe abortion and contraception, “Fight” is a reminder of the persistent commitment of previous generations to bodily self-determination and sexual rights which paved the way for the progressive concepts of love, pleasure and sexuality of today.
