The third evening of the “MENA Prison Forum in Berlin” series will focus on Lebanon, 50 years after the start of the civil war. The film “Erased,__Ascent of the Invisible” will be shown about people who disappeared during the war. Afterwards, Makram Rabah will talk about the consequences of this violence that can still be felt today.

The third evening of the “MENA Prison Forum in Berlin” series turns its attention to Lebanon – marking 50 years since the outbreak of the civil war (1975–1990). To this day, the war's legacy remains largely unresolved, the country is in an unprecedented crisis (since 2019) and has experienced two further wars (2006, 2023–24). The first part of the evening will feature the film “Erased,__Ascent of the Invisible” (2018, 77 mins.) by Ghassan Halwani, which retraces people who forcibly disappeared during the civil war. A significant number of them were imprisoned, tortured and killed in Syrian prisons, as Syria occupied Lebanon until 2005. Afterwards, Makram Rabah (commentator and analyst, lecturer in history, American University of Beirut) will discuss the long-standing and current dynamics that have shaped Lebanon since the civil war – focusing on the legacy and impact of enforced disappearance and detention.
