How does a caring neighbourhood grow together, and what can art contribute to this? How can we maintain structures of solidarity and care in the midst of social upheaval, crises and austerity measures?

For many years, HAU Hebbel am Ufer has maintained close ties with its neighbourhood and the area around Mehringplatz. Here, it encountered existing places of cohesion and care. Over time, it has become part of this network and is actively involved in it. The “Berlin bleibt!” series, for example, focused on the struggle for public welfare-oriented urban policy, affordable housing and urban solidarity. Since then, HAU's outreach programme “HAU to connect” has developed and maintained long-standing collaborations with partner organisations in the neighbourhood. Based on trust and continuity, a wide range of synergies have emerged.

But especially in times like these, the challenges are immense: long-established structures in the fields of education and social affairs, as well as art and culture, are threatened in their very existence by budget cuts and austerity measures – to name just one of many crises. Yet it is precisely these spaces and collaborative initiatives that possess knowledge and experience in dealing with crises and upheaval. And that is exactly why we must focus our attention on them.

With “Celebrating Neighbourhood,” HAU, together with long-standing partners, artists, and neighbours, invites you to two days of celebrating and strengthening neighbourhood community. With a party, music, a neighbourhood walk, film screenings, inputs and live acts from the neighbourhood, tatreez and crafts, discussions and games, a space for exchange and visions is created – for young and old neighbours and anyone who wants to join in!

The event is the last stop in the nationwide event series ‘Arts and Encounters”. The seven institutions united in the Alliance of International Production Houses present their strategies for opening up and involving a diverse society for discussion.
