Jaamil Olawale Kosoko

#negrophobia

  • Tanz im August

Pain lies at the center of Jaamil Olawale Kosoko’s performance #negrophobia, a personal story about loss and the luck of escape. In response to the violent death of his brother, Kosoko investigates the identity of African-American men. An artist and poet with an immense physical presence, in his lecture performance, Kosoko navigates between personal and social concerns. Together with IMMA/MESS, a dancer and performer who incorporates drag elements into the performance, he presents the audience with powerfully staged bodies, forcing them to contemplate how they might also be involved in the construction of forms of racism.

#negrophobia was created with commissioning support from Gibney Dance.
