ADIRA Drag Festival celebrates East Mediterranean culture through drag, music and performance. Under the slogan “Who’s Your Diva?!”, the third edition will, for the first time, also take place at HAU Hebbel am Ufer. This year’s festival attempts the near-impossible: a Drag Ensemble devoted, collectively, to a figure who has never shared a stage in her life. The Diva is a solo act by definition. What happens when divas must compete for the light?
What alliances or rivalries emerge when icons used to standing alone are thrown into an ensemble? Revered and criticized in equal measure, divas can be imperfect, controversial, delusional, scandalous, politically complicated, and at times even deeply questionable. Yet it is often through these contradictions that they become sites of identification and fantasy for queer communities. Each artist reimagines a diva who shaped their journey, from faithful tributes to radical reinterpretations, and unleashes her on a stage she was never meant to share.
