In this autobiographical documentary about family, love of cinema, and the perpetual condition of being between homes, languages, and places, Shafik explores her relationship with her son and his father, the renowned art director and production designer Onsi Abou Seif. Also front-and-center is their shared entanglement with Egyptian cinema, past and present: her through her groundbreaking scholarly work, and him through his set designs and the development of the visual worlds of numerous masterpieces of Arab cinema from the late 60s of the previous century until today. The film’s journey unfolds into deeper reflections on migration, political oppression, and the erasure of places and identities. ALFILM presents “Home Movie On Location” in its German premiere.
