“Planetarians of all countries, unite!”
What if, instead of leaving the planet, we had to learn to inhabit it differently? andcompany&Co. continue the story of Heiner Müller’s “Die Umsiedlerin” (“The Resettler”) and turn agriculture into the setting for a new class struggle over land, crops and food.
In “Die Umsiedler*innen: Ackern gegen das Anthropozän” (“The Resettlers: Farming Against the Anthropocene”), andcompany&Co. continue the story of Heiner Müller’s scandalous 1961 GDR play – written in the year the Berlin Wall was built and the first manned space flight took place. Today, the Earth is under massive pressure from intensive agriculture, global warming and species extinction. At the same time, humanity dreams of colonising other planets. A crew of hardy habitat dwellers stand their ground: “We’re staying here!” They tend to plants, nurture the soil and fight against the poisoning of the biosphere.
In this final phase of the PLANETKULT series, things get messy: patriarchy ends up in a self-watering hermetosphere, queer vegetable patches spring up and millet is revered as a superfood. For in the 21st century, the class struggle is fought over calories and proteins. It is time to debate collectivisation once again.
The PLANETKULT series is an artistic-scientific experiment in three phases: Dialogue, Field Academy and Theatre. In these different formats, art and science come together and jointly explore possible futures for life on Earth: Sophie von Redecker, a farmer-scholar-activist, and the biologist Ulf Soltau (“Gärten des Grauens” / “Gardens of Horror”) will be discussing the following on 5 December: How can new forms of coexistence between humans, other species and their environment be achieved?
