“EXIT” is the performance of the hour. It gains new relevance against the backdrop of current politics. Antonia Baehr dedicates this work from 2018 to an ever-present, but mostly overlooked phenomenon of western theatre buildings: the obligatory illuminated emergency exit signs. She makes them the stars of her lecture performance. “EXIT” takes us into a sphere between light and dark, where the green glow confronts us with the supposedly fixed oppositions of inside and outside, safety and danger or body and image. It is a dream journey through the things that theatre tries to repress and the phantasm of the Western image of humanity it has helped to create.

After the performance: A get-together on the topic of Berlin culture cannot be cut
Autumn 2024 was dominated by the slogan “Kulturabbau verhindern” (“Prevent cultural cuts”). Numerous cultural workers and other Berliners took to the streets to protest against the impending cuts to the cultural budget for 2025.
This May and June, the draft for the 2026/2027 double budget will be drawn up before it is negotiated again by parliament in autumn. Savings of around 160 million euros have been announced for the cultural sector. Now is the time to come together again, to raise our voices in solidarity against the city-wide austerity plans and to convince parliament of the relevance of art and culture in Berlin.
To mark this occasion, HAU Hebbel am Ufer and Antonia Baehr cordially invite you to a get-together after the performance of “EXIT” on 24 May. We would like to get into conversation together at the bar in HAU1: What can we do in this moment of negotiations to advocate for a strengthening of culture in Berlin?
Before the informal exchange, there will be statements on the current situation from Annemie Vanackere (artistic director of HAU), Antonia Baehr (artist and member of Freelance Dance Ensemble Berlin) and Janina Benduski (LAFT Berlin).
