A temporary community allows itself to be imperfect for one evening: inspired by the music of the “King of the Waltz,” “DI/Strauss technique” unfolds as a collective ritual of joy and irreverence, blending queer humour with operetta kitsch and camp catharsis.
The choreographer, singer-songwriter, performance artist and provocateur Ivo Dimchev has been thrilling HAU audiences for many years. In his performances, he skilfully brings together high culture and subculture, pop and Balkan rhythms. Yet he never simply takes to the stage – again and again, he challenges his laid-back audience. This is also the case in “DI/Strauss technique”: Dimchev transforms the intoxicating potential of Johann Strauss’s music into a humorous and playful group choreography involving the audience. He weaves themes such as self-love, money troubles, sexual self-determination, or emotional overload into the dancing, singing crowd, only to react to them immediately himself with artistic flair in a spirit of divine absurdity.
“A choir of frivolity. A love letter to all human things. Di/Strauss yourself but let's do it together!”
