BEING PINK AIN'T EASY

Gangstas, pimps and hoes: the US rap world is saturated with images of inflated masculinity. When Black artists like Cam’ron and Kanye West started a trend in pink plush, fur and suede in the early 2000s, they proved that even Barbie’s favourite colour couldn’t affect the racist attributions that had accumulated around the Black heterosexual male. BEING PINK AIN’T EASY reverses social constructions such as race and gender choreographically when a white dancer embodies movements and poses tagged as Black. An ambivalent realm of experience in pink between ‘white fragility’ and cultural appropriation.
